Canadian Foreign Minister Anand said that Canada rejects the results of the State Duma elections held by Russia from September 18 to 20 in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

Anand said that Canada condemns the manner in which Russia's 2026 State Duma elections were conducted, stating that the elections took place in an environment marked by pressure on the political opposition, independent media and civil society, as well as restrictions on fundamental freedoms.

Anand argued that the elections in Russia were characterized by widespread censorship, intimidation, suppression of the opposition and the detention of opposition figures, adding that election observers accredited by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe were not invited to monitor the elections.

Anand said that the elections held in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine were contrary to international law, adding that Canada rejects these elections and does not recognize Russia's attempt to legitimize its occupation.

Reiterating Canada's support for Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, Anand said that Canada would continue, together with allies and partners, to apply pressure on Russia, uphold the United Nations Charter and international law, and support Ukraine in achieving a just and lasting peace.
