Demerdzhiev: Our goal is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries in traffic accidents
Sofia, June 12 (Hibya) - Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev spoke about road safety in the country and the measures taken as part of parliamentary oversight in the National Assembly.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Bulgaria, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev provided information on road safety in the country and the measures taken as part of parliamentary oversight in the National Assembly.
Minister Demerdzhiev stated that when they took office, traffic accident indicators were extremely poor, with fatalities increasing by 25 and serious accidents by 32 during the first six months of the year.
He explained that the issue subsequently became a government priority and that active efforts resulted in a 26 percent decrease in the number of serious accidents during the first ten days of the month. He emphasized that it is critically important for this decline to become a lasting trend.
The minister noted that two main issues emerged during the meeting with the Prime Minister: the lack of coordination among the relevant institutions and the inability to ensure a reliable flow of data.
Demerdzhiev added that their long-term goal is to develop a comprehensive government strategy that includes not only the Ministry of Interior, whose share of responsibility is around 30 percent, but all stakeholders.
