Guterres: Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea restrict trade
New York, August 24 (Hibya) - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said attacks and disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea are restricting the transport of energy, fertilizers and other essential goods. Guterres stressed that the rights and freedoms of navigation must be respected.

Referring also to the conflicts following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Guterres said the attacks threaten sea routes that are important for the export of oil, grain and other agricultural products.
Guterres said the situation is leading to higher prices, increased hunger and harsher living conditions, particularly for the world’s most vulnerable populations, stressing that the unhindered exercise of the rights and freedoms of navigation is one of the fundamental elements of peace, security and shared prosperity.
Guterres said protecting these rights and freedoms is a legal obligation and a humanitarian necessity.
