Guterres condemns military escalation in the Middle East
New York, February 28 (Hibya) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as Iran’s retaliatory actions across the region, undermine international peace and security.

Guterres stressed that all Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter, saying: “The Charter clearly prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.”
Calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation, Guterres said: “Failure to do so carries the risk of a broader regional conflict with serious consequences for civilians and regional stability. I strongly urge all parties to return to the negotiating table immediately.”
Guterres reiterated that there is no valid alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter, which forms the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.
