Israeli military court sentences Palestinian to life imprisonment
Jerusalem, October 8 (Hibya) - The Israeli military announced that Nadmi Abu Bakr, who was convicted of causing the death of Israeli soldier Amit Ben Yigal during an operation in the West Bank village of Yabad in 2020, was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay more than 4 million shekels in compensation.
The Israeli military announced the court's ruling against Nadmi Abu Bakr, who caused the death of Israeli Staff Sergeant Amit Ben Yigal during an operation carried out in the West Bank village of Yabad in May 2020.
According to a statement from the Israeli military, the Samaria Military Court convicted Abu Bakr of intentionally causing death and obstructing judicial proceedings. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and ordered him to pay more than 4 million shekels in compensation.
The statement said that on May 12, 2020, security forces conducted an operation in the village of Yabad to apprehend wanted individuals. During the operation, Abu Bakr allegedly threw half a brick weighing between 9 and 11 kilograms from the roof of a building toward Israeli soldiers. The brick struck Amit Ben Yigal, causing his death.
Abu Bakr was then said to have fled from the roof into his home and pretended to be asleep to prevent security forces from finding him. After the security forces left the area, he reportedly returned to the scene, collected the fragments of the brick and threw them by the roadside to obstruct the investigation.
The Israeli military stated that the military prosecution would continue working to ensure legal proceedings are pursued against anyone who threatens the security of the country and its citizens serving in the military.
The statement also noted that the Israeli military shares the grief of Ben Yigal's family and will continue to support them.
