The Portuguese government and unions representing teachers and Portuguese-language lecturers working abroad have reached an agreement on the New Regime for Portuguese Education Abroad (RJEPE).

Under the new arrangement, teachers’ and lecturers’ salaries are expected to increase cumulatively during the 2027-2029 period, by around 20 percent for the vast majority.

It was stated that restructuring the salary scale will require an additional investment of approximately 8.6 million euros, including social security costs.

In a statement, Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the arrangement will support the work of education professionals who ensure the presence and promotion of the Portuguese language and culture around the world.

The new regime was said to reinforce the government’s commitment to enhancing the value of education professionals and strengthening the quality and sustainability of the Portuguese-language education network abroad.
