American University Students are Increasingly Choosing to Study in Canada
Vancouver, April 16 (Hibya) - American students are increasingly turning to Canadian universities. According to data from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, the number of applicants for graduate programs in the 2025 academic year increased by 27% as of March 1, compared to last year.
The university recently reopened applications for graduate programs from American students. The plan was to process the applications quickly so that students could begin their studies in September.
Other Canadian universities have a similar story to the University of British Columbia. The University of Toronto, Canada's largest university, also reports an increase in applications from American students. The application deadline there ended in late January.
A spokesperson for the University of Waterloo said that more American students are visiting the school, and the university's website traffic from the U.S. has increased by 15% since September.
Gage Averill, Vice President of the University of British Columbia, linked the increased interest from American students in Canadian higher education to actions taken by the U.S. government. Since Donald Trump took office earlier this year, the U.S. has cut funding to universities and canceled work permits for foreign students.
Averill said: "This reason, especially the campaign the government has run against international students in the U.S. and the cancellation of work permits. Additionally, a center is being developed to examine the social media accounts of foreign students."
According to information from the University of British Columbia, approximately 1,500 American students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs at the university.
