Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prevot discussed the deepening humanitarian crises around the world and the challenges facing aid operations during his meeting with UN Relief Chief Tom Fletcher in Brussels.

Referring to the situation in the humanitarian aid field, Prevot said, “Humanitarian needs are increasing while funding is decreasing. Aid workers are facing unprecedented levels of attacks. And the world’s attention is simultaneously spread across too many crises.”

Stating that Belgium will continue to play an active role in this process, Prevot said, “Belgium will not close its eyes. Therefore, we are supporting our new Belgian humanitarian aid strategy with flexible and predictable funding over several years. Because aid organizations in the field need to plan, not just react.”

Minister Prevot thanked aid workers for their efforts in high-risk regions, saying, “In a world where the instinct to turn inward dominates, Belgium chooses to remain active.”
