In a statement from the Parliament, it was noted: “Some malicious actors are spending significant time and resources attempting to undermine our democracy by spreading disinformation and interfering in elections.”

The statement reported that at the start of the 2024–2029 parliamentary term, a new special committee was created regarding the European Democracy Shield, granting MEPs 12 months to propose measures to strengthen the EU’s democratic resilience against foreign interference and disinformation.

“To achieve this, the committee is reviewing the impact of current and planned legislation to identify possible loopholes that could be exploited for harmful democratic interference. Its work will contribute to the upcoming European Commission initiative, the 'European Democracy Shield', aimed at addressing the most serious risks to EU democracy.”
