Friedrich: The right to education for Palestinian refugee children must be defended
New York, May 16 (Hibya) – Roland Friedrich, Director of UNRWA Affairs for the West Bank and East Jerusalem, stated that the agency’s schools must be reopened immediately and the right to education for Palestinian refugee children must be defended.
Friedrich said that UNRWA schools in East Jerusalem remain empty after Israeli forces ordered them closed last Thursday.
He reported that around 800 boys and girls miss their classrooms, teachers, and friends, adding:
“This morning, Israeli forces returned to the schools. Violating UN privileges and immunities once again, they forcibly entered the Shu’fat Camp schools to confirm that no educational activity was taking place. Heavily armed personnel roamed the schoolyards looking for children and teachers.”
Friedrich emphasized that considering education at UN schools in East Jerusalem a crime, as done by Israeli authorities, must be condemned at all levels. He added: “These UNRWA schools must be reopened immediately, and the right of Palestinian refugee children to education must be defended.”
