European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos provided assessments of candidate countries' EU accession processes as part of the 2026 Enlargement Reports.
Kos noted that the 2026 Enlargement Reports had made the path to EU membership clearer for some candidate countries and presented roadmaps for the four countries that had made the most progress on reforms in recent years. In this context, she announced that a timetable had been established under which Montenegro could sign its accession treaty as early as June 2027.
Kos also stated that the accession processes of Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine had gained momentum and that their priorities for the coming year had been clarified.
Emphasizing the importance of political will in the reform process, Kos said, "This progress shows that political will changes everything. The path to the EU remains open to all candidate countries ready to make a similar choice."
