Netherlands expresses concern over violence in Lebanon and calls for diplomacy
Amsterdam, April 10 (Hibya) - Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen expressed concern over the violent incidents in Lebanon that have caused hundreds of deaths and injuries, calling on the parties to immediately cease fire and engage in diplomatic negotiations.
Berendsen stated on behalf of the Netherlands that the recent violence in Lebanon has caused serious concern.
While noting that Israel has legitimate security concerns regarding threats from Hezbollah, Berendsen emphasized that the military response raises questions in terms of the principle of proportionality.
The statement also warned that escalating tensions in the region could jeopardize the ceasefire between the United States and Iran as well as the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
Calling for a diplomatic solution for regional peace and stability, Berendsen highlighted the importance of immediately ending hostilities and disarming Hezbollah.
He also welcomed the readiness of Israel and Lebanon to engage in direct negotiations and invited all parties to participate in the process.
