Farewell message from von der Leyen to outgoing Portuguese President de Sousa
Brussels, February 27 (Hibya) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with outgoing Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and thanked him for his leadership and humanitarian approach throughout his term in office.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made a statement on the occasion of the completion of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's term.
Describing the last decade of de Sousa’s leadership of Portugal as a "tumultuous period," von der Leyen emphasized the Portuguese leader’s commitment to democratic values.
Referring to President de Sousa’s stance in times of crisis, von der Leyen said, "From the pandemic to the tragedy of wildfires, he stood by his people; with his closeness and humanity, he listened to them, comforted them, and reassured them. In times of peace, he was a unifying presence, and in times of crisis, a resolute hand."
Von der Leyen concluded her statement with the words, "Europe benefited from his wisdom, faith, and humanity."
