Rubio: Americans in Iran must leave the country immediately
Washington, February 28 (Hibya) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for American citizens not to travel to Iran for any reason and urged those Americans currently in Iran to leave the country immediately.
US Secretary of State Rubio announced that Iran has been declared a "State Sponsor of Unjust Detentions."
Rubio stated that the Iranian regime has been using Americans and citizens of other countries as political pawns for decades and said that this practice must end.
Rubio also mentioned that President Donald Trump had issued an executive order last fall to protect US citizens from unlawful detentions abroad, and Congress had authorized the designation of Iran in this regard through the passage of the 2025 Unjust Detention Act.
Rubio noted that if Iran continues its practices, additional measures, including geographic travel restrictions on US passports to or from Iran, could be considered, saying:
"The Iranian regime must stop its hostage-taking practices and release all Americans unjustly detained in Iran; these steps could lead to the end of this designation and related actions. We encourage Iran to do this. No American should travel to Iran for any reason. We reiterate our call for Americans in Iran to leave the country immediately."
