Palestine: Stop attempts to change the status quo at the Ibrahimi Mosque and Hebron
Ramallah, 16 June (Hibya) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine condemned attempts to change administrative arrangements in Hebron and the Ibrahimi Mosque, describing them as a “dangerous escalation,” and called on the international community to intervene urgently.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that attempts to change the historical and legal status of the city of Hebron are unacceptable, and criticized measures taken by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich regarding parts of the city and the Ibrahimi Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The ministry emphasized that Israel has no sovereignty over Hebron or any other Palestinian city, stressing that Palestinian rights are based on history, international law, and long-standing residence.
Referring to the 1997 Hebron Protocol and other signed agreements, it stated that unilateral actions do not change the legal status and warned that such steps would escalate tensions, threaten regional stability, and undermine the peace process.
The ministry called on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to act in support of the two-state solution.
