British police release photos of suspects who set fire to a mosque
London, October 6 (Hibya) – Police investigating a reported arson attack at a mosque in East Sussex have released photos of two people whose identities they are seeking to confirm.
Fire crews were called to the mosque on Phyllis Street in Peacehaven at around 9:50 p.m. on Saturday.
According to Sussex Police, no one was injured, but the front entrance of the building and a car parked outside were damaged. Police are treating the incident as a hate crime.
In the released photos, one man is seen wearing a black jacket with a white “Pre London” logo on his chest.
The second man is wearing bright red gloves.
Police said that since the incident, there has been an increased police presence at the scene and additional patrols have been deployed to ensure safety at other places of worship across the district.
A volunteer at the mosque, who wished to remain anonymous, told the BBC that two men tried to enter through the front door but found it locked.
They then poured a liquid at the entrance and near a parked car outside before setting the vehicle on fire.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the attack as “deeply concerning” in a post on X, calling on the nation to “stand united.”
Mahmood said, “The greatest strength of this country is its ability to build one nation from many communities. Attacks against Muslims in Britain are attacks against all Britons and against the country itself.”
