Flash flood warnings in parts of Bulgaria remain in effect today
Sofia, October 7 (Hibya) – Bulgaria’s National Meteorological Office issued a warning for possible flash floods in five districts on October 7, while eight districts are under a red code — the highest alert level — due to forecasts of heavy rainfall.
The districts under flash flood warning on October 7 are Dobrich, Varna, northern Burgas, Yambol, and Haskovo.
The red code warning applies to Dobrich, Varna, Burgas, Silistra, Shumen, Razgrad, Targovishte, and Yambol.
All other districts are subject to an orange code warning for dangerous weather conditions or a yellow code warning for potentially hazardous weather.
The warnings come after heavy rainfall on October 3 that particularly affected southeastern Bulgaria, reportedly killing four people and causing major damage.
Alexander Dzhartov, Head of the General Directorate of Fire Safety and Public Health, said on the afternoon of October 6, “The operational situation is currently relatively calm.”
Dzhartov added, “Our teams continue clearing debris caused by the flood in Elenite,” a resort severely damaged on October 3 and closed to the public until October 8. “A new decision will be made on October 8. Two hundred people have been evacuated from Elenite.”
Dzhartov noted that due to red code warnings, teams have been mobilized and will patrol these areas “so that information reaches us in time and we can respond promptly.”
